Canine hurricane victims from Gulf Coast need homes

She is amazed at their resilience.

Susan Pearce, owner of Chesapeake Pet Resort in Hollywood, is taking care of two canine victims of Hurricane Katrina. She is hoping, however, that someone soon will be able to provide them with permanent homes.

Chessie and Katie, two pit bull, mixed-breed dogs, were among 100 pets without homes after the hurricane who were airlifted in mid-October from a temporary shelter in Monroe, La., to the Philadelphia area. Chessie and Katie found a temporary home in St. Mary's County at the Chesapeake Pet Resort. Three other displaced dogs from that same airlift are living temporarily at the Pet Paradise Kennels in Leonardtown.

"Basically, we're caring for them for free, but we're looking for homes," Pearce said Friday.

"They've been through a number of shelters already," she said. "Amazingly they are both very happy...very fun dogs."

Both dogs at Chesapeake Pet Resort are between 2 and 3 years old, according to a local veterinarian. Pearce said both Chessie and Katie will need a little training from their new owners, but says they both have good personalities.

The October airlift was organized by ABKA, the trade association for the pet boarding industry, and the American Kennel Club and United Animal Nations. After arriving in Pennsylvania the dogs received veterinary care and temperament testing before being placed in pet-care facilities like Pet Paradise Kennels and Chesapeake Pet Resort for longer-term care.

The dogs will be fostered and cared for free of charge until they can be reunited with their owners, or until adoptions can be arranged. These pets will remain at Pet Paradise Kennels and Chesapeake Pet Resort until at least the end of the year, in the event their original owners are trying to locate them through http://www.petfinders.org or other resources.

"We're trying to get some kind of interest going so we can get them going and on their way," Pearce said.

Chesapeake Pet Resort Meets the Needs of Local Pet Owners
For many of us, life just wouldn’t be as satisfying without pets. After a long day, time playing and cuddling with a pet can make stress seem easier to handle. But today’s busy lifestyles discourage some people from pet ownership. What will your dog or cat do while you’re sway at work or traveling?

“We needed a place to leave our healthy, frisky dog…for a day where he would be well treated,” said Robert Smalley, former U.S. Ambassador and owner of Gaston, a Wheaten Terrier puppy and frequent guest at Chesapeake Pet Resort. “It has been a great find for us in every way, and we’ve learned it is increasingly meeting the needs of others in St. Mary’s County as well.”

Owner Susan Pearce spent “the past six or seven years” making plans for Chesapeake Pet Resort, looking for the perfect location and getting certified as a Pet Care Technician by the American Boarding Kennel Association. In November 2002 the resort opened on the site of the former Hollywood Kennel.

Chesapeake Pet Resort provides upscale boarding and “doggie daycare” facilities for Southern Maryland pets. Each pet has its own private space, with elevated pet beds, fresh food and water, treats and toys. Each dog has its own door to a private outdoor run, to come and go as they please.

Pearce lives on the 10-acre property, so she is available for round-the-clock care for pets anxious while away from home. With comfy sofas, soft music and television, the pets have many of the comforts of home – and homemade dog cookies, too.

This spring, Chesapeake Pet Resort will expand its fenced areas to include walking trails and will also furnish “cabins” with traditional, home furniture and themed rooms for vacationing pets, so their human companions can travel with peace of mind – and maybe a little jealousy, too. With walks on lead, group playtime, grooming services and transportation to local veterinarians, it’s more like a spa than a traditional kennel.

There’s a place for cats at Chesapeake Pet Resort, too. The Cattery has a dozen “cat condos” with fresh bedding, supplies, food and water, treats and toys for each individual cat. Feline visitors can climb the scratching post, cuddle up with a trained, animal-loving staff member on a rocking chair, or just watch the fish tank and laze in their sunny condo, in a wing well separated from the dogs.

The aim is to make time away from home less stressful. At Chesapeake Pet Resort, pets can feel comfortable and stay healthy while their owners are away, whether they need regular medications or just a quiet, clean place to stay. To protect pets in residence, all pet guests must be up-to-date on their vaccinations before a stay at the resort. Geriatric pets, and other animals with special needs, can get all the love and attention they require, and then rest in their own secluded wing.

In the coming months, Chesapeake Pet Resort will also offer custom pet gift baskets. For information or to get a peek at the newly renovated Chesapeake Pet Resort, visit the web site at www.chessiepets.com.
